A new effort to help consumers gain more control over their identity and privacy, without breaking the business and civic value of the Internet, launched Sept. 27-28 with a first convening in Chicago of the “Internet Multistakeholder Privacy Initiative.”  For publishers, broadcasters, content creatives, privacy advocates and information technologists, it’s  an exciting opportunity to make a concrete contribution to solving one of the most important public-policy issues in online commerce.  Apply by email (below) to request participation.

WHAT HAPPENED?

A diverse group of 25 people gathered over two days at Chicago with the goal of defining the challenge of governing privacy and identity on the web, and seeking consensus on a process for doing so.  One outcome sought — a model data-use privacy policy that fulfills public privacy expectations and can be adopted and championed by publishers — without government regulation or tech-platform control.  Lead facilitor will be Lawrence Strickling, a lawyer and former U.S. Commerce Department administrator who heads the Internet Society’s Collaborative Governance Project

WHO ORGANIZED?

The three organizing groups were:

    • The Information Trust Exchange, a 501(c)3 nonprofit former last year with a mission to help foster rules and services for trust, privacy, indentity and information commerce on Internet.
    • The  Collaborative Governance Project of the Internet Society.
    • The Local Media Consortium (LMC), which representing 70+ local media companies in top markets across the United States covering more than 1,600 publications and broadcasters,
    • With Mozilla guiding a pre-convening workshop.

WHY REQUEST PARTICIPATION?

By joining the process at subsequent meetings, you will help create a viable alternative to creepy advertising tracking, leaky security, scattered and inaccurate identity management . . . to a world dominated by proprietary algorithms and competitive silos  . . . and government regulation that is misinformed and too late.

The ideal multistakeholder process has the following attributes:

  • Stakeholder-driven: Stakeholders determine the process and decisions, from agenda setting to workflow, rather than simply fulfilling an advisory role;

  • Open: Any stakeholder may participate and the process includes and integrates the viewpoints of a diverse range of stakeholders;

  • Transparent: All stakeholders and the public have access to deliberations, creating an environment of trust, legitimacy, and accountability; and

  • Consensus-based: Outcomes are consensus-based, arrived at by compromise, and are a win-win for the greatest number or diversity of stakeholders.
